When I was growing up, we had a neighbor, who had a beautifully manicured green lawn. I wanted so badly to lay down and feel it’s cool green carpet, but the neighbor admonished me to never walk on her lawn. It was to be looked at and nothing more. Now, when I see a lush green lawn, it doesn’t seem so beautiful to me anymore. I see the water consumption, chemical use, and energy used to keep this monoculture lawn, and I think, “what a waste.” Biodiversity is needed not only in our front yard, but also in all natural habitats. Biodiversity allows species to support each other and to develop healthy ecosystems. A lack of biodiversity could impact the food chain and cause droughts and famines. A variety of native plants will be able to fight invasive species. When you walk in a forest, you don’t see only one type of tree or plant. We are all interconnected. There is a reason and purpose for it, and we need to support it.
